John G. Gums, PharmD,  Professor of Pharmacy and Medicine, University of Florida

 

Dr. Gums, a Professor of Pharmacy and Medicine in the Departments of Pharmacy Practice and Community Health and Family Medicine at the University of Florida, is also the Director of Clinical Pharmacology Education and the Director of Clinical Research in Family Medicine. After receiving an undergraduate pharmacy degree from the University of Wisconsin and a PharmD from the Medical University of South Carolina, he subsequently completed a fellowship in Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. In 1985, Dr. Gums joined the faculty at the University of Florida, where he teaches in the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine and regularly serves as preceptor for Doctor of Pharmacy students on the Ambulatory Care/Family Medicine Clerkship Rotation. He has twice received Teacher of the Year awards from the University of Florida Department of Family Medicine.

 

The author of more than 65 articles in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Pharmacotherapy, Annals of Pharmacotherapy, and the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy), 9 abstracts, 22 Continuing Education programs, and 9 book chapters, he has given more than 100 presentations, including national and internationally invited presentations to pharmacy and medical associations. He maintains an active clinical research program and is currently a principal investigator on 8 primary care clinical research trials.

 

Dr. Gums holds membership in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and is a member of the Family Practice and Ambulatory Care Editorial Advisory Council for the Annals of Pharmacotherapy. In 1993, the Governor appointed him to the State of Florida Pharmacy Services and Technical Review panel. He received the Outstanding Clinical Practice Award from ACCP in 1997.  Most recently, Dr. Gums served as a Primary Health Care Policy Fellow with the Secretary of Health and Human Services in Washington, DC.
